Student-Athlete Speaks The Truth

At least someone is being honest about big-time college football:

Just pay the dudes, give them access to classes if they want them, and call it what it is, a development league for the NFL.

  1. I had a roommate who played football at the University of Minnesota. By any reasonable definition, it was well over a full-time job that involved significant travel. He was a bright and hardworking kid—the son of a pharmacist—but even he had a lot of trouble maintaining grades during fall and spring quarters when the team worked out.

I think athletes in big time programs should not only be paid, but their scholarships should be extended by a quarter for every quarter they were distracted by athletics.

  2. That makes sense to me. At a minimum, they could be guaranteed so many credit hours of courses if they wanted them, either while they were playing or in off-seasons or after their pro career.
