Since irrigation isn't sustainable outside of the Mississippi delta, what are we going to do if climate change messes up the weather patterns significantly enough that the corn belt can't rely on rain to produce good crops? I don't know, and I hope we don't find out.
You ask a some damn good questions. To which I would add another—is this the year we finally discover what happens when crop failures are so widespread, there are actually food shortages in USA? That has never happened before in the nation's history so it is not like we have a wealth of experience to draw upon.
ReplyDeleteMy best guess (and greatest hope) is that we'll have enough to prevent widespread shortages, as there is a lot of variability in weather and soil and we generally have pretty significant amounts of food warehoused, but you don't know until the combines are running. I would expect some very high prices, however, which will be bad enough for most folks.
